What is the PBMA?
The Professional Bicycle Mechanics Association is a 501(c)6 nonprofit dedicated to the support and development of bike mechanics in every field of the industry. We offer training, certification, continuing education, insurance and other services to our members. Our mission is to promote, develop and advocate for the professional bicycle mechanic.
Who are we?
We are an association of individual mechanic members, retail members, corporate supporters, and industry partners. Our Board of Directors is comprised of diverse individuals with extensive experience in the industry, many of whom wrench on bikes every day. The board is supported by volunteers, mechanics, and shop owners in an advisory and active capacity.
Why should you be a member?
Being a member adds your voice to a growing body of professional mechanics who want to better themselves and their place in the cycling industry. When we speak as one in pursuit of common goals, others will listen. Your support enables us to continue our work for you. Members receive many benefits through the PBMA, including job listings, training, insurance, resources, industry deals, etc.
How do I join?
Membership details and links can be found here.
Do you offer Scholarships?
The PBMA works together with donors, sponsors, and volunteers to provide grant and scholarship opportunities wherever we can. In 2020 we raised $27,000 to send several BIPOC candidates to further their careers via educational opportunities. We also maintain rolling diversity, hardship, and general grants as funding is provided. If you believe you qualify and would like to see what assistance is currently available, please email any PBMA Board Member to get the process started.
What is Mechanic Certification and why should I get it?
Assembly Certification and Mechanics Certification are both benchmarks that serve to define what a professional bicycle mechanic or professional assembler is. By getting certified or certifying your employees, you can prove baseline proficiency in these areas and set a standard for the level of service and expertise in your shop. These certifications are ubiquitous across the industry and, as competency based exams, work in conjunction with various educational programs around the world. Click here to find out more.
What are the benefits of becoming a member?
PBMA Membership grants you direct access to resources, community, and discounts with partner sites and vendors. The PBMA uses your membership to fund educational opportunities, to lobby on behalf of professional bicycle mechanics, and to create new opportunities and resources that directly benefit the field. We believe the mechanic is the undervalued backbone of the bicycle industry and strive to elevate the position of professional mechanics everywhere. You can view the resources here.
