Mechanic of the Week p/b Abbey Bike Tools - September 26th, 2016 #mechanicmonday

Read Now

PBMA is pleased to introduce our newest Mechanic of the Week p/b Abbey Bike Tools, Neil Cernitz, of Portland, Oregon!

For those of you just tuning into #mechanicmonday, this is where we feature one mechanic each week, chosen at random from nominations submitted the week before. It’s all about mechanics supporting fellow mechanics – even behind the scenes, where we are proud to say that our Mechanic of the Week is presented by none other than Abbey Bike Tools and the Friar himself!

Neil is a retired aircraft mechanic, who has been working in the bike industry in some capacity for well over twenty years. He was nominated by his colleagues at Western Bikeworks, all of whom say that Neil is the epitome of a “tireless, detail-oriented, and intelligent mechanic, adept at solving problems quickly and effectively.” Not only does Neil turn wrenches for Western Bikeworks, but he is also an accomplished frame builder. He specializes in functional, efficient, and aesthetically-pleasing steel designs, each of which is a labor of love that Neil produces under his very own Cernitz Cycles label.

PBMA and Abbey Bike Tools are proud to feature Neil this week, and we are – as always – in awe of the immeasurable talents of our fellow mechanics!

PBMA to partner with Specialized SBCU

Read Now

Specialized Bicycle Component University (SBCU) and Professional Bicycle Mechanics Association have partnered for the upcoming 2016/2017 class season to help and support bike retailers who carry Specialized products. SBCU offers courses for retailers in all aspects of business. Their courses include: Technical service, Body Geometry Fit, Retailer Merchandising, Retail Excellence, and Product Sales & Community.

“SBCU and PBMA share a common belief…riders want their bikes serviced by educated and professional mechanics. And they will go out of their way to find the right person to do that work.” Said, Luke Simson, SBCU Technical Service Instructor. “James Stanfill and the PBMA have created a group full of passionate, like-minded people that have the ability to change the cycling industry for the better. We at SBCU see great value in this and are excited for the future.” Everyone who attends an SBCU Service course will be able to join the PBMA at a discounted rate.

Members of the PBMA will receive:
* A 4 month trial membership to the PBMA with reduced annual dues
* Discounts to almost 400 providers
* Access to SBCU only Forum space
* Inclusion in the PBMA mechanics directory as well as the on-line locator

The PBMA’s foundation is in technical education. Our Industry Partners such as Specialized and their SBCU program are critical for the future success of bicycle retailers. Early in the PBMA timeline, Specialized was one of the first to reach out. Through time, partnering and discussion we jointly arrived at a simple activation point for their attendees to begin to experience all of what the PBMA has to offer. the PBMA looks forward to growing this relationship and creating industry trends that benefit not only the individual mechanic, but their employing shop as well.

Specialized retailers who wish to attend an SBCU course are encouraged to contact their Market

Mechanic of the Week - September 21st, 2016 #mechanicmonday #onwednesday

PBMA is pleased to introduce our newest Mechanic of the Week p/b Abbey Bike Tools, Michael Kubancsek, of Indianapolis, Indiana!

For those of you just tuning into #mechanicmonday (even though today it's #onwednesday) this is where we feature one mechanic each week, chosen at random from nominations submitted the week before. It’s all about mechanics supporting fellow mechanics!

Michael has been a shop mechanic since 2010 and a race mechanic since 2012. He currently works as the head mechanic for the Marian University Cycling, where he supports the team at every event including track, road, MTB, and cyclocross races. Michael was nominated by his shop customers and collegiate student-athletes to be featured by PBMA.

Everyone we heard from honestly couldn’t say enough positive things about Michael. Whether it was through their astonishment at his wake-up time (4AM is early for anyone, not just college kids!) or their appreciation of the fact that “his first priority is keeping [his] riders safe, so when anyone requests something to be fixed or changed on their bike, he jumps right on it or puts it on his long to-do list,” Michael’s student-athletes all agreed that he is calm under pressure and does everything he can to give each rider complete mechanical and logistical peace-of-mind before a race.

If we learned one thing from the student-athletes who nominated Michael, it’s that without his relentless support, there is no way that Marian Cycling would have won all 34 of its national team titles. So on behalf of the PBMA, thank you, Michael, for all that you do for your team! Your work and your dedication to developing up-and-coming cyclists is an inspiration to us all.
